West Centretown

Description

West Centretown is bounded by Albert Street and Scott Street on the north, Carling Avenue on the south, Bronson Avenue to the east, and the O-Train line and Bayswater Avenue to the west.

West Centretown has traditionally been an immigrant receiving area, probably because of more affordable hosing (at least until very recently). It was a substantially French Canadian and Irish Catholic area before WWII, supplemented by Italian (and Eastern European) immigration both before and after WWII. Vietnamese refugees arrived at the end of the Vietnam War (1975) under Mayor Marion Dewar’s Project 4000. Soon after, Chinese immigration surged; with the end of Hong Kong’s British rule. Vietnamese, followed by Chinese, are the largest business groups among the many varied Asian businesses along Somerset St. The Italian businesses are centered along Preston.

Dragon dances are frequent along Somerset as well as Buddhist parades, and the Autumn Festival. Festivals celebrating Italian culture in Ottawa include Settimana Italiana (Italian Week) and La Vendammia.
